Alanas Gurinas & Sholto Dobie, Laurie Pitt, Swallow Spit

A Hiss of Light is the first recording made by sound artists Alanas Gurinas and Sholto Dobie. Both artists work with acoustic sound sculptures and self-made instruments made with everyday materials. In the case of Gurinas, vibrating and taught paper objects emit pulsing sine tones, organic chirps and shimmering noise that drift like weather fronts whilst in Dobie’s work, air is the main material, compressed and channeled through a set of valves, tubes and timers, into pipes of various origins.

In these pieces, assembled and recorded at the artist-run space Studium P in Vilnius, Lithuania their sonic world’s combine, and fold into an embrace with each other. Forming invisible landscapes and channels, in which the listener, with an ear to the ground, moves through.

Alanas Gurinas is an interdisciplinary artist of a young generation who creates in the field of sonic performances and audiovisual installations. In his sonic practice he explores sound as a textural phenomena, the themes of ephemerality and relations between various hearable and unhearable objects and spaces. A slightly light tone is a live acoustic sound performance which uses paper as a main material for producing sound. Different kinds of papers are placed between two wooden clamps and with the help of weights are being strained till they find their resonance state. As a result different paper drone tones and textures are being produced.

Cuckoo Spit is a spooky and sweet lo-fi project born in rural North Yorkshire in songwriter Lottie Morton’s bedroom. Sounding reminiscent of early 4AD releases, the songs deal with personal themes such as limerence, alienation and suspicion featuring lyrics infused with pastoral imagery and metaphor inspired by Lottie’s surroundings as an adolescent . Cuckoo Spit started performing live in 2023 and plays as both a solo act and a band – this will be their Glasgow debut after recently relocating from London where the project received a lot of positive attention.
