The term Agora is Greek for ‘open place of assembly’. The Agora was where the community congregated to discuss events of the day; politics, religion, philosophy, and legal matters. It later designated the open-air marketplace of a city.
The Agora served the same purpose in ancient Athens as the town square and town hall in later societies. It was the centre of the athletic, artistic, business, social, spiritual, and political life in the city. The Athenian Agora is frequently referenced as the birthplace of democracy since it was here that political discussions and arguments gave rise to that concept.
It is that open spirit of discussion that we wish to encapsulate. A new platform for new ideas, channeling the ancient Greeks by using theatre as a vehicle for political and philosophical debate and conversation. The Agora serves as a place to explore social justice issues and make political commentary, in the hopes of igniting conversations and inspiring change.
An evening of short plays/ extracts that each seek to spotlight an issue around social justice. All from and performed by emerging creatives. Followed by a discussion of each play and their themes. The Agora is an opportunity for people from all walks of life to bring a new story, discussion, or style to the stage. Whether it be a part of a larger project, an experimentation, or simply airing out a concept to a new audience.
